Canine Vaccine and Testing

Requirements and Recommendations

Vaccine or Test

Information

Bordetella

We require that this vaccine be given every six months. We require that the vaccine be given at least 5 to 7 days before it is needed for optimum protection. It is mandatory for dogs in our kennel, hospital, and grooming facility.

The Bordetella vaccine is given to dogs at risk of contracting Bordetella Bronchiseptica, better known as Kennel Cough. We recommend this vaccine for dogs that are exposed to other dogs in grooming salons and kennels, and for dogs that attend training classes socialize in playgroups or daycare and dog parks.

Da2ppv - 1 Year, 3 Year

This vaccine is mandatory for our patients at the hospital.

Da2ppv stands for Distemper, Canine Adenovirus type 2 (which includes Hepatitis), Parainfluenza, and Parvovirus.  It is a critical vaccine for the health and safety of all dogs. After the initial puppy series of injections, Da2ppv is good for one year. The next time it is given it is good for three years.

Leptospirosis

This annual vaccine is optional. It helps to protect against Leptospirosis which is spread by contact with animal urine infected by the disease. It can also be spread by standing water contaminated with urine from an infected animal.

Lyme

This annual vaccine is optional although highly recommended. It helps to protect against Lyme Disease which is carried by ticks.

Rabies - 1 Year, 3 Year

This vaccine is required by law, regardless of the pet's age and lifestyle. It is mandatory for our patients at the hospital.

When the Rabies Vaccine is initially given it is good for one year. The next time it is given it is good for three years.

Heartworm Test

This consists of a simple blood test that checks for Heartworm disease and three tick spread diseases- Lyme, Erlichia, and Anaplasmosis.

We highly recommend that all dogs have a yearly Heartworm test regardless of the dog's age, lifestyle, and use of Heartworm preventative. We require that all dogs be tested every other year even if they are on preventative year round.
